Day Two in Park City

Catastrophe was obverted this morning when Howe found the coffee filters after thinking he may have forgotten them. We were also having some issues getting the refrig to cool down so we put it on propane which seemed to do the trick by this morning and then switched back to electricity and is doing well now. We also had a bit of an issue getting the pilot light lit on the oven, must have had some air in the lines but I got it finally. The other issue was we thought the park had cable TV at each site, but that is not the case so no TV for us for a while, but we do have lots of movies. Last night we celebrated the start of the trip with a couple of really good strip steaks on the mega grill, baked potatoes, and a nice salad.

We got a relatively early start, at the trailhead by about 9:30 as there was heavy afternoon thunder showers forecasted. We decided to start small since it was our first ride and the weather threat so we did a lower level loop around Park City. I managed to screw up and forgot to put a tape in the video camera so no video today. The first few miles were rail trail but then headed up on single track / double track. We hit an intersection that was not in the ride description and we seemed to have taken the wrong trail from there. But with the help of the GPS and Howie’s superior sense of direction, we found some more single track that put us heading in the right direction. All in all, the section was nothing to write home about but not too bad. We crossed under the highway, went along another rail trail for a bit then headed up on Prospectors loop, heading back toward the vehicle. The ride directions were much better and we were able to navigate it without a problem. There was a bit more foliage and tree cover on this section, mostly aspen.

Total ride mileage was 17.5 and we were out about 3 hours. We stopped in at one of the local bike shops, White Pine Touring, to check things out. Great selection of all things biking including some just off the press Adventure Maps of the Salt Lake/ Park City area. That was the one thing we were really missing was an overall map of the area. They also had a couple of maps from other areas that Howie picked up as well, he’s never seen a map he doesn’t like.

Good thing we did the early ride as we just got with some pretty good rain

Tomorrow we head up higher into the mountains
